On a recent visit to Atlanta, we experienced the Smith Farm exhibit at the Atlanta History Center. It was an actual farm house and enslaved peoples’ living quarters that was preserved and moved to the Center’s grounds. It gave me a first hand view and better understanding of the environment those enslaved in Georgia experienced.
I will always remember how the slaves’ quarters looked and the contrast between theirs and the living conditions of the farm owners. It was powerful to imagine how all of their day-to-day lives were. Poverty and luxury on the same property.
